Summer is right around the corner, and as your family gears up for backyard bbq’s, camps, and family vacations, it’s easy to forget about the importance of staying healthy. Here are four health trends I’ve uncovered that will help your family stay healthier and happier this summer and beyond.
1. Amp up your sun protection.
Preventing sunburns as well as the sun damage that leads to wrinkles is really job #1 during summer. Fortunately, today’s high-SPF sunscreens in stick, crème or spray form make on-the go sun protection quicker and easier than ever. For busy moms, blemish balm (BB) crèmes are potent multi-taskers that have various SPF levels as well as the ability to moisturize, conceal, and brighten dull skin. Plus, look for more clothing brands this summer offering swimwear, accessories, and fitness apparel with UPF that add an extra layer of sun protection around that SPF shield.
2. Healthy eating can be convenient, affordable, and FUN.
Ditch the drive-thru! With so many delicious summer fruits and vegetables there’s no better time to start transforming your family’s diet than summertime. Major discount chains like WalMart are now stocking organic fruits and veggies, as well as healthy, portable snacks; so eating healthy is budget-friendly and convenient, too.
Gardens are places of wonder and discovery. Planting a vegetable garden with your kids is not only fun and instructive it’s also a great way to get them to eat healthy. In fact, more families are catching on to gardening, with 35 percent of households now growing fruits and vegetables in a home or community garden, according to the National Gardening Association.
3. Fitness “wearables” and health apps go mainstream.
Wearable smart bands that track miles, steps, distance, heart rate, calories, sleep and more are expected to be one of the hottest health trends this year. According to independent analyst firm Canalys, “wearables” will be a “key consumer technology” in 2014. With so many different new product offerings, the prices and options on these devices will make them more affordable and useful than ever.
Yes, there IS an app for that! Health apps will continue to keep your family healthy by tracking fertility or recording health history, treating bug bites, allergies and heat stroke, or keeping tabs on the weather, UV and heat indices.
4. A healthier gut is a healthier body.
People are starting to catch on to what doctors have known for years -- the immune system and digestive system are closely linked. Immunity and a healthy digestive system will be a top priority this year, according to a recent article on health trends by the Institute of Food Technologists. Adding more vitamin-rich and fiber-rich whole foods is a great way to strengthen immunity, in addition to dietary supplements like EpiCor. In fact, a recent study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that in sophisticated gut health models EpiCor acts like a prebiotic, which in turn may support healthy bacteria in the digestive tract and strengthen immunity.
Summer should be about fun and being happy. And, putting some focus on staying healthy will make sure you’ll have more fun, happy days. Follow these four essential trends and you just might have the best and healthiest summer ever.
