Meet Craig Fraser Division Chief/Fire Marshal in Ankeny, IA and big EpiCor fan.

Q. When did you first get involved with the World Police and Fire Games (WPFG)?

A. I first became involved with the WPFG in 2009 in Vancouver Canada. I trained for approx. a year prior to the event and had a great experience. I really enjoyed meeting the athletes, police and firemen from all over the world.”

Q. How extensive was your training?

A. I trained harder for the 2009 event with weight training at least three times a week and pushups between the weight training on my days off. I actually torn my rotator cuff in my left shoulder, but competed anyway. The doctors recommended surgery for the tear, but I was hesitant to go under the knife. I continued doing pushups every night in my office, doing 10 sets of 50 pushups with a two-minute break between each set and my shoulder improved. I believe that EpiCor helped me stay strong and healthy during my recovery. Now I do 700 pushups a night at my desk with 14 sets of 50 pushups and a two-minute break between each set. I trained once a week here at the fire station with weight training for this year’s competition.”

Q. What was the most memorable aspect for you from WPFG 2013?

A. Meeting the different firefighters and police officers from around the world and spending time in Ireland. Ireland is a beautiful country much like Iowa, and the people in Ireland just love Americans.”

Q. How is WPFG different from other competitions you've been involved in?

A. “It’s really only different due to it having only professional police and fire participants and the rules follow the National Weight Lifting Organizations which are much more strict on what you wear and how you compete.”

Q.Why is a strong immune system important to you as a firefighter?

A. I must be ready to respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day and as a Chief Officer I’m responsible for the men and women who serve in my Department. I have to make critical decisions in times where stress can be extremely high which means I have to stay on top of my health so not only my physical strength is important, but my mental strength as well.

Q. Why is a strong immune system important to you as a WPFG competitor?

A. I keep in shape and continue to compete as an example to the young men and women in our department. About 45% of firefighter fatalities result from heart attacks suffered either on the fire ground or after the fire due to the physical and mental stress of the job. I want my people to know that good health is the most important thing we can do to keep on the job and always go home to their families after every event.

Q. What do you do to keep you immune system strong?

A. A strong immune system is the catalyst to good overall health. Exercise, eating right and supplements like EpiCor help me cope with the effects my job can have on my body and mental well-being.
